Costumes Dress

Do You Need Original Costume Ideas?

Dressing in the right costume is very important to some people. In fact, there are individuals who consider creating the most original costume an art form. Unfortunately, with the same options in catalogues year after year and limited options at costume stores it can be almost impossible to be the only one wearing a single costume at any event; so you might be desperate for some original costume ideas.

The trick to having the most unique and original costume is to think “outside of the box” and come up with your own costume ideas. It isn’t as easy as it might seem, so here are a few ideas to get you started.

If technology is your thing, dress up as a MySpace.com page. Use poster board to create your “MySpace” page adding photos and comments. Cut a hole in the poster board for your face and carry around a music player for your page’s theme music. You can also dress as a “software pirate.” Dress as you imagine a traditional pirate would dress but instead of a sword and chains, wear a belt of floppy disks and CD’s draped over your shoulders. Do you love your iPod? Dress completely in black, use black face paint to cover any exposed skin and dance enthusiastically like the images in the iPod commercials.

Humor is always a hit when reflected in original costumes! Have some simple fun by dressing up as “static cling.” Pin classic items to your clothes like socks and handkerchiefs to appear as if they are electrically attracted to you. Another fun idea is to dress at the poor man who is on the game board of the “Operation” game! Pink or flesh-colored clothing is required to pull this costume off and you need to make the “organ” pieces out of felt. Use double-sided Velcro to attach the pieces to your clothing for people to be able to pull your “organs” out! Carry around tweezers to make your costume a real game! For the ultimate finishing touch, get a buzzer from a gag store and use it whenever people remove your “organs.” For a twisted sense of humor, dress as a deceased rapper, or the “grim rapper.”

Finally, it isn’t uncommon for at least one person to want to go all out for the truly tasteless costume or a costume that has the most impact because of its shock value. You might be one of those people and there are plenty of options available for your costume! Dress up as a traditional cat with black leotard or sweatpants and sweatshirt along with cat ears and tail, yet carry around your own litter box as an accessory. You can use softened tootsie rolls in rolled oats as your litter for a truly memorable reaction! You can also decide to dress up as your favorite celebrity mug shot. One of the most recognizable ones is of Nick Nolte and all you need is a Hawaiian shirt, messy blonde wig and mug shot name and serial number sign. If you want to truly offend with your costume, stuff your clothes with all kinds of stuffing and wear a T-shirt exclaiming, “I Beat Anorexia!”

From fun and flirty to original and offensive, there are original costume ideas for everyone. You don’t have to be handy with a sewing machine or paint brush to have the best costume. Use your imagination and know what reaction you are going for and you are sure to have the best costume at your event!
